My Side

When Lindsay and I decided to build a new house, we were excited because it was going to be “ours.”

We would decide the layout, the paint, the brick, the cabinets, the floors… everything was going to have our stamp on it.

When we moved in, we picked our side of the closet, our side of the bathroom, our side of the bed…

When people would ask us our favorite part of the house, we would tell them the closet because it leads from the master bathroom to the utility room, to the hallway with the boys bedrooms.

It was a pathway that we walked all the time to see the boys, to grab something quickly that we left on the counter before we walked out the door, to quietly and quickly get from one side to the other.

What I realized yesterday is there are few things between a couple in a marriage that is just one of theirs. One of those is their clothes.

So many times I have walked that path with each of our things on either side of me. Today is different…

Today I walked the path with only one side filled.

Today it went from my side to something I can’t even put into words.

We do not take anything with us when we leave this world except maybe a part of someone else’s heart.
